Its 6 days into the new year but that hasn’t officially stopped me from popping more surprises and ‘parties’ up in bo’s face. Following the success of last year’s birthday surprise for the boy – this year I decided to start & spice things a little earlier for his 34th Birthday this year:
Wednesday, 2 January 2008 – I tell Luke that his present is going to be delivered to him from 4 – 6pm and ask if he can be home (to which he gladly agrees working from home, just to find out what his birthday present is going to be). Meanwhile, during lunch – I take a quick stroll to Adelphi, do my final checks and confirmation on his gifts…(as well as my bank account) and wait in anticipation for his phone call on his reaction towards his gifts. (backgrounder: its not easy having a boyfriend who openly declares that his wants are few and expensive. While I really wanted to get him a nice automatic leather watch for his birthday, I thought I’d get him something to so with his hi-fi set up since he’s been bugging and strongly hinting how nice the KEF IQ5 SE speakers look in the magazine…he’s also been hesitant about getting new XT350 speaker cables (since the QED Silver Anniversary ones were too ‘bright’ for his liking on his current missions) as well interest to get a TT. Being the audiophile-in-the-making that he is, I decided that something hi-fi related was the way to go for his birthday this year, since I did get him a nice watch last year, and a cool pair of shades for Christmas. He wasn’t ready to spend much money on this expensive hobby too, as much as he loved reading about them.)
Wednesday, 2 January 2008, 5.30pm – the phone rings. My heart races. “Sweeeetieeee!! You got me speakers?!?!??!?!”. I’ve no idea if that was a reprimand (he kept saying how achy his heart was from the expenditure I made) or an exclaimation of joy. The next 10 minutes was calming him down and reassuring him that all I wanted him was to be happy with his birthday presents, knowing that he would never blow $1800 on a pair of speakers, at least for now – no matter how much he liked them. And that wasn’t all. Demanded that he come pick me up from work that evening because I had his 2nd birthday present – a brand new rega p1 tt (which I got at a really great deal). We’ve discussed about getting a turntable for some time last year, but never really got to it because we weren’t sure of the set-up cost, as well as weren’t ready to buy LPs just yet. But I reckon that the TT I managed to get was at such a fantastic deal – I just thought I’d get it anyway. And it was no regrets. For that evening, we did nothing else but enjoyed the music from the brand new KEF IQ7 speakers (the 5s were too small for his room, I felt) and the TT. Yum.
Saturday, 5 January 2008 – Luke has no idea that I’ve planned another birthday surprise for him. I tell him that I would like to have lunch at McDonalds at Ridout (since both of us have never been there) before heading down to IKEA. We reach there before the scheduled time and just when he starts to stand in line to place his order – I tell him (in desperation) that I’ve already booked a party area for his birthday and that all his buddies were coming to celebrate his birthday!!! I manage to catch him off guard. He let out a blush and follows me to the party area while waiting for the others to arrive. All I can say is that the birthday celebration went better than expected and everyone had oodles of fun! We played pegs and musical chairs, sang songs and it was a first for most to attend a McDonalds’ birthday party. Everyone had a goodie bag to take home – and for the birthday boy, he had fun memories to keep.
Wednesday, 9 January 2008 – We’ve both taken leave for the day to have fun, celebrate and share some quality time together. I’ve ran out of surprises (except for one more pressie) but I’m really happy that everything else has gone well so far. 🙂
More updates to come!
