Every year around mid-April, I will start thinking of ways to surprise mum on her birthday. I know I have to think early because I’m not good at planning for things last minute – and a dear person really doesn’t deserve such forgetfulness on her special day too, especially when she has done so many things for you.
This year was a little difficult…because Luke & myself were planning for a better surprise *grins* to give our mums during the Wedding in June (so budget was bit of an issue…) and her actual day fell on a Sunday (4 May 08), so I had to plan carefully how I was going to catch her unaware and surprise her. On the other hand, it was relatively easy to throw her off guard because she assumed that I was so caught up with the wedding preps that I prolly overlooked her birthday, and she had hinted previously that she didn’t need anything for her birthday because she understood that we were saving up for our wedding preps. So all I really needed to go was just play along with the game and gave her the acknowledgement that she wouldn’t get anything then. Hah!
Its a usual that I sent a bouquet of flowers to her office on her birthday every year. Just to make her feel special. This year was no exception, but I did plan for the flowers to arrive a few days earlier than her actual day which gave her a pleasant surprise (I was surprised at how much the prices of flowers had increased!). It was really timely because just the night before, we did have a tiff over the wedding preps again – which got me in tears when she called me by my full name. I was glad that the sunflowers put a smile to her face.
And it didn’t end there…I had pre-planned with Aunt BC on throwing her another surprise during their weekly mj session (since she only started this late last year) and it threw mum off guard again because she knew that Luke & I were over at Art’s place wining & dining that evening. It was 10pm when we started heading for Aunt Jen’s, drove to a few petrol kiosk just to buy candles, to no avail. We were on the brink of giving up till I decided to try my luck at the 24-hr minimart just outside Aunt Jen’s place. And God answered my prayer when I saw a selection of candles available.
All was in place as the sleepy Aunt Doris secretly let us in to the house premises, as we set up and prepared the ‘cake’. The ladies did their little part in sneaking out to express their excitement during the mj session (oh goodness, I was worried that mum would smell a rat). The lights in the mj room suddenly went off (just when mum was throwing a tile!), while Luke & I walked in and sang a birthday song with the rest of the joy luck club gang. Mum was really surprised and shocked. But very very happy. AND oh yes, the apple strudel cake replacement was a big welcome by the hungry ladies. For that moment, I just had to forget about the diet regime (yet again) and indulge in the celebration.
Today, we had another mini-celebration with the church group and luncheon with luke & his mum! What a double/triple celebrations it were. Glad that mum loved her new pair of ultra comfy & stylish rockport sandals too, that she attempted to skip to a beat while we were out today!
Happy Birthday Mum, and thank you for always making everything better! I love you lots!
