Because I go around making sure that each of my girlfriends (the IJ bunch) gets smashed drunk on their birthdays every year, when it came to celebrating mine this year – they sure didn’t hesitate.
Just 2 weeks earlier, I had organize Margie’s and made sure she had her share of Flaming Tower drink (which got her puking onto her birthday cake). Fiona mentioned that I was going surely going to have my turn real soon but I didn’t think much about it, since I was always the organizer of all the meet-ups.
Lo and behold, on CNY day 1, Fiona started smsing everyone and checking on schedules. I k pt saying that my evenings were packed, but they somehow managed to arrange their schedules really last minute to fit in a dinner & drinks on Wednesday despite the last minute confirmation. I remember talking them out of doing the drinks bit, since I was the only one who had a meeting the next morning – but these ladies didn’t seem to register that.
We started nice & slow, I filled myself full with dinner & desserts before heading to Wala for drinks & wings. Fiona let me choose what time I wanted to receive my share of potent drinks, and I recalled trying to delay the entire activity saying that I was really exhausted and that I had to go off early – only to find out that drinks had already been ordered.
The band was amazingly good, playing songs I liked. They were terribly friendly too, coming over to say hi after their 2nd set on pretext of wishing me Happy Birthday (they had found out when the girls secretly dedicated a birthday song to me while I was in the loo). I must have been really drunk because I vaguely remember telling the drummer how I could definitely play the drums better then him (that the drummer and bassist asked me up to play during the 3rd set), and telling them how I thought Jason Mraz was waay cooler and some gibberish about what losers they were for not knowing how to play a Beatles song I had dedicated. Shesh. The band took it in their stride, like gentlements nonetheless and I couldn’t be more appreciative of their reaction after the embarrassment I caused.
The girls also got what they wanted. I’m sure Fiona was waiting for this moment all night long. I started to stumble on my way out, ran to the drain and stood there for a good 15 minutes with 2 rounds of puke. Eeew. Before I knew it, I was in Luke’s car being woken up to walk upstairs to the bed room. I was quite the lousy drinker, slammed myself on the bed as the husband changed and clean me up before I scurried to the bathroom and hugged the toilet bowl (doing another 2 rounds) for the next 30 minutes. I started shivering as I lay on the bathroom floor, refusing to get back in the bed for fear of more puke coming out. But a sudden gush of sobriety suddenly overcame me. I was good to get back in bed and sleep the night through.
The start of the 25th Birthday celebrations was definitely no short of memorable. And as we dive into the weekend with more gatherings, I’m kinda look forward to remembering this moment of turning quarter of a century old!
