I’ve been trying very hard to manage my temper with my 17-month old toddler.
Which has been tough, when he can get to you in ways you least expect. Like tickle your toes when you are trying to snooze in, taking a handful of snacks and throwing deliberately all over the back seat of the car because you disallowed him to hold on to the snack box knowing the inevitable was going to happen (guess what, worse happened!), whine, cry & kick a fuss just because you asked him to start saying “please” at every request he makes and so far he’s been saying “please” as and when he..(erm) pleases, or insist that you carry him when you have like 5 grocery bags in one hand and need to push the pram with the other when he is clearly capable of walking…amongst other adventures.
Yet I’m aware that it’s all part of his growing up and all that I can ever do is to reminisce that moment and not re-live it again. So during moments that get me all heated up and annoyed, I quickly remind myself to take a long, deep breath and keep calm, carry on.
Like the incident which happened on a morning last week, when he woke up and said a string of words obviously to get attention from my half-dazed state. And before I was sober enough to realize & do a recording, he wouldn’t indulge me. Kids. They sure know how to get your attention and then toy with it.
Liam is definitely becoming more fun to hang out with and easier to care for as he gets older. He has such a friendly soul & disposition, always smiling and waving back to reciprocal strangers. He enjoys time spent out on the grass, often pointing to the birds and trees around us, happy to pick up and relocate pebbles, hop around & chase whatever he spies on the ground – a lot like his papa & his laid back nature.
But as much as most of the friends that we hang out with often have noticed his ever-growing confidence and outspokenness, there are also moments when he’s a complete superglue. He cries & screams if I’m out of sight (say behind a pillar just grabbing something out of the pram), or if I got to buy food or if I pop into the toilet cubicle… and so these days I usually share a cubicle with him (the ones at ION are spacious and clean BTW :p)
I also got into the pool with the chungkin for the first time during a recent swim makeup class. We had such a splashin’ time. Not something I would do on a whim unless we’re headed for home right after because forgetting to bring a hairbrush and going everywhere else after swimming with mad hair and a bare face felt weird…but yes at 17 months – I finally hung out IN the pool with my little man.
His love for animals continue to grow as fast as his vocab and speed of walking…cats, birds, dogs, rabbits, horses. His PDA for any animals he sees is heartwarming, the owners get so tickled by his chuckles and gestures to stroke them gently. Most recently, he uttered “xie xie” which is ‘thank-you’ in mandarin! Aww, I’m so proud of the boy that he’s growing up to be!
Happy 17 months old little dude 🙂
