For posterity’s sake and future “ah-hah!!!” moments to the Bo!
Last month I threw the Bo a 40th Birthday surprise bash. He has never been big on celebrating birthdays but a 40th…that I had to commemorate.
The grand plan was to go on a 3-weeks vacation to celebrate both our forays into the new decades, but with work commitments, school, recovering of finances from the huge spends over Christmas and New Year’s, that had to be postpone (wedding anniversary maybe!). And so I started drawing up plans of my own.
I’ve always been big when it comes inviting guests and throwing parties but knowing the Bo, I knew an intimate affair with his longest and closest buddies (whom they rarely get a chance to rally these days due of family commitments) was the way to go. I wanted to keep things simple but very very very memorable. The last one I threw for him with the same bunch was his 35th at Mac’s and some of the guys still remembered and asked if I was going to throw it at the golden arches again because they had such a good time there!
It was relatively easy gathering the troop thanks to social media (and the Bo not being on it) and I was utterly appreciative that everyone was extremely accommodating in meeting the time & date. It was tough trying to communicate over whatsapp without raising the Bo’s suspicions though – there were moments he asked what I was giggling at – but we pulled it off!
Right from the start I knew I wanted a venue representative of the Bo’s likes – outdoors, cozy, chilled, relaxed, charming, unpretentious…blah blah blah. I must have brainstormed and spoke to about 15 venues and had decided on one initially…until a visit across the street to an oldie but goodie haunt I used to frequent sans the Bo made me realized that he would absolutely love the vibes here. And bingo, he did!
The actual day was quite a task to get through! From the story I made up about attending a friend’s kid celebration to brunch plans thereafter, it was exhausting trying to get the boys ready and leave the house on time without giving the plan away. We eventually arrived at the venue only to have the birthday boy spot his friend who was decked out in tennis chic (dress code of the party and he wasn’t even a tennis guy) at the carpark *facepalm + I pretended not to see him* and his friend quickly squatted and hid behind a pram to which Bo went “why are you hiding behind a pram? So I won’t see you?”. OH NO! OH NO! OH NO! my mind went.
Thankfully friend was smart to respond that he was here to have brunch with his family and Bo accepted that before proceeding to park. I wasn’t very optimistic in him being surprised at the party but I guess the Bo must have been off his guard so much that as he walked into the gorgeously decorated area and was greeted by his best buddies and their screaming “SURPRISE!!!”, his face froze in shock.
Everyone had a very enjoyable time catching up over food, the huge-arse brithday cake, kids running about. Looking at the wide grin on the birthday’s boy face and the stream of thank-yous that ensued from the whatsapp chats, I think I rocked the Bo’s 40th birthday, plus a night’s stay at the Marina Bay Sands where we just laze at the rooftop pool and cocktail all day long!
