Sembawang Park and Beach has been one of my to-visit outdoor grounds ever since I heard about it from an ex-colleague late last year. So when Liam asked if we could go to the park over the long weekend to do some skate scooting, I decided to take the opportunity to explore.
While it’s quite a drive from the main road, it is relatively easy to navigate to using the road signs from Sembawang Road. Alternatively, apple and google maps will do the job too. Car drivers might be please to know that there’s ample parking lots available (park at the carpark opposite the Boys’ and Girls’ brigade) too.
Upon arrival at Sembawang park, we were greeted with a buzz of activities. There were some families gathering on the luscious green grass for a picnic, others starting fire at the barbecue pits, and kids running about freely. I was particularly fond of the park’s quaintness, the sight of big, old trees…providing a much needed shade from the unforgiving heat and the park retaining some of its colonial structure, lending more character to the park.
Having to answer a call of nature, it was plesant to find the loo cubicles clean and dry despite having separate shower cubicles within the same space. They were equipped with toilet paper within the cubicles too. There were also kids-height taps available which came in handy when we needed to wash Liam’s hands before giving him a snack.
After our past visits to West Coast Park and Pasir Ris Park, Liam has inevitably associated huge outdoor playgrounds and parks together, and so at Sembawang Park he started looking out for a playground. He got all excited when he spotted the huge “Battleship” playground from a distance but got disappointed seeing that it was bordered up with tape after we got nearer. “We’ll be back when the playground reopens” we assured him, aware that he had his eyes fixed on the long, big, winding slide.
We ended our visit to the park with some drinks and food at Beaulieu House, a charming eatery in an old colonial house overlooking the Johore Straits. The food and service left us impressed. We hope to be back some day to try the rest of their dishes.
