I had my first Disney On Ice experience 2 years back. A mama-girlfriend had asked on group chat if we were keen to watch the magical spectacular together and as apprehensive as I was to pay a hefty price tag to watch what I supposedly thought was a bunch of figure skaters dancing to tunes of Disney, I decided to be spontaneous and booked us three (was 2 months pregnant with Ollie then) really good seats. I figured if Liam’s BFF (of similar age) enjoyed it, surely it had to be worth the bucks. Besides, it would be the the husband’s first watching Disney On Ice as well, plus it’ll be a nice surprise for almost 2-year-old Liam to meet his larger-than-TV Mickey Mouse and Friends “in the flesh” for the first time!
It was until we made our way to the entrance of the indoor stadium that I realized what a huge following Disney On Ice had! We were surrounded by a sea of enthusiastic parents and kids dressed in Disney costumes, and the atmosphere was electrifying!
And then it happened. The lights dimmed, our favourite Disney characters started to make their entrance. I heard Liam going “wow” so many times, while doing the same myself silently. We were enchanted alright, as we watched popular Disney cartoons “come to life” through storytelling singing and dancing. I was enthralled by the skating skills of each and every one of the performers. How does one skate so gracefully across a huge ice skating surface in full costume and remain true to character?
Being the Disney girl that I was, growing up with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King, Snow White, to name a few, and memorizing most of the songs by heart; there I was…singing along (I sure wasn’t alone) to hit songs aloud! It was as magical as the Disneyland’s street/electrical parade shows, except on ice! And it was the spirited showcase that my girlfriend promised. We had such a good time and was surprised at Liam’s ability to stay focused for most parts considering it was the first performance/show we’ve ever brought him to!
And so this March holidays, guess where we’ll be bringing our boys to for some family entertainment and magical moments! Presenting a “Magical Ice Festival”, Disney On Ice promises a new twist in fairytale fun!
With special appearance by Disney’s current hit – Frozen – where royal sisters Elsa and Anna and their hilarious Olaf (who loves warm hugs? I do!) together with the rest (Kristoff and Sven), and not forgetting my all-time favourites, Mickey and Gang, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, sounds like it’s going to be one super awesome show!
I can’t wait to watch it with the family and surprise Liam with this magical treat again! Now that he’s about 2 years older, he understands story concepts a little better and has even sat through Frozen twice. Or was it thrice? Hmm.
Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival runs from 11 March 2016 to 20 March 2016 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Tickets can be purchased online via www.sportshubtix.sg and you can learn more about the show here.
