And just like that, 2016 came and went.
“What a year, can’t wait for it to be over”, I texted my BFF as I waited 4 minutes to countdown with the family.
“But that’s what you said about 2015!” she reminded me.
As much as I wasn’t too attached to 2016 enough to miss it in the first few hours of 2017, it sure wasn’t as shitty as end-2014 & 2015. Much to my disbelief, quite a lot was achieved, as I now take time to document it down.
Earlier this year, after 8 months of cafe hopping fun with friends right after half-day work, coupled with a huge leap of faith; I accepted the company’s offer to convert from PTWM to FTWM, and the challenges which came along with it. As if I wasn’t already time-strapped with the demands of full-time work, I went to enroll myself in 2 back-to-back courses to improve my financial knowledge (so that I could also understand the financial products of my clients better). In pursuit to carve out more me-time and have personal growth, I also took on a floral arrangement class and a few sessions of learning how to play the Ukelele.
Starting Ollie on full day care on the month he was old enough to be in PG class guilt me till no end. The anxiety was lessen upon knowing that he adapted really quickly mostly thanks to big brother Liam who was checking in on him ever so often, and lovely teachers who doted on our boys enough to let them sit, eat and sleep together. For the many days wen I had to work till midnight, sometimes even till 2am, I’m thankful for the superhelper’s initiative to settle the boys’ meals and bedtime routine. There was one day when I got home about 11.45pm, and saw Liam sitting in the middle of the hall, telling me how much he missed me and wanted to see more of me. It broke my heart hearing that, and since then I keep reminding myself not to work too late if I can help it and to work from home, if need be.
It was also amazing to see how my wardrobe of mostly shorts & tees had an overhaul once I started full-time work. It did feel good to dress up for meetings or events, and draw compliments from the husband and Liam. With an encouraging nutritionist (which the husband cheekily gifted to me as a surprise Christmas present in 2015 instead of maybe buying me a new handbag or something), I saw my weight go down by 6kg over a period of 3 months and my muscles increased in a healthy way that was purely based on improved eating habits. Needless to say, I had a clean bill of health for most of the year, save for the times when I had to care for the boys when they fell ill with little or no sleep. The energy I’ve since amassed from eating well and properly has been absolutely life-changing despite consecutive cheat days.
On the party mama front, I also managed to pull off 2 successful birthday parties as the boys turned one year older, and pushed myself creatively by creating a DIY birthday party for Ollie with the help of my superhelper.
And lastly, in our effort to resume adventures out of our usual haunts and Singapore – we visited the National Gallery Singapore, attended our very first SSO Babies Prom, ventured to Legoland for the first time (with a 2nd visit 6 months later), and went for our first holiday as a family of 4 to Hong Kong (despite having to pay insane peak prices). No doubt almost everyday during our trip was filled with challenges, frustrations and exhaustion, yet it was every bit fulfilling seeing how much the boys enjoyed themselves even if it was just a stroll along the pier, or to our favourite congee or mee stall. We are so going back to Hong Kong for another gastronomic adventure. The hubs was tickled that his Cantonese son also picked up a few Canton phrases after taking the MTR almost every day (which was kinda a big deal for our train fanatic).
