“Still lazing in bed or already at the clinic? What’s the downtime for the treatment and what are the risks?”, I received the first text of the day from the husband.
“Here. No downtime, it’s non-invasive”, I responded.
“Ok. Just want to make sure that the procedure is as safe as possible. How long will it take?”, another reply came within seconds.
“It’s not lipo. I will be done in less than an hour for one part.”
“okay, good to know.”
Unlike me, my husband is not one who texts, uses Facebook, Instagram or blogs. In fact, when we first added each other on MSN messenger and started chatting, it annoyed me that he took a while just to type few words, in response to my lengthy paragraphs…before calling me unexpectedly on my land line to continue the rest of our conversation offline. He preferred to talk than to type.
Hence whenever he bothers to text me more than the usual “okay”, “will do”, “see you”, “OTW”, “am here”, “love you”, I know it’s his eccentric way of dealing (with worry) and caring.
It was treatment day at Halley Medical Aesthetics, which meant that I’ll be undergoing CoolSculpting treatment to freeze excess fats off my flabby mommy tummy!
As a precursor to the CoolSculpting treatment, I had a consultation with Dr Terence Tan to recap on what was discussed previously as well as a talk through on what to expect from the CoolSculpting procedure. In short, I would be getting my fats frozen via Cryolipolysis – a medical treatment used to target and destroy fat cells and stubborn fat tissue through precised controlled cooling, without affecting the skin – via a fat freezing device called CoolSculpting by Zeltiq which is recommended for spot reduction of body fats.
I’d also be treated with one of Zeltiq’s latest applicators – the CoolAdvantage and CoolAdvantage Plus which would target a bigger surface area while reducing my treatment time by nearly half to just 35 minutes and 45 minutes respectively! (Treatment time without these new applicators take an hour.) Would you believe it, freezing your fats actually takes a shorter time than getting your hair or gelish manicure done!
“How does everything sounds? Good? Ready to get started on CoolSculpting?”, Dr Tan asked. I sure was. My heart was fluttering with excitement just thinking of how I could finally improve the appearance of my flabby ‘mommy tummy’. I was ushered to the treatment room and asked to change into the set of loose and comfy clothes which I had brought along for my treatment (you can opt to change into the set provided by Halley as well).
My weight, height, blood pressure and body measurements were then taken by Halley Medical Aesthetics’ in-house nutritionist, Jean Tong (apparently I had lost about 5cm on my waist from the weight loss medications that I was prescribed but my weight was merely a 0.6kg drop from the last visit which was about 2 weeks back) before Dr. Terence Tan took over and proceeded to measure my bulging fats with the familiar ‘kiap kiap’ (plastic calipers).
Yikes! My mommy tummy looked hideous!
Next, I had my tummy drawn on, marking out specific areas which were identified for CoolSculping. This helped Dr. Terence Tan assess the most suitable applicator to use for my area, and also served as a point of reference for fitting of applicators during the treatment. It turns out that the excess fats clinging on my lower tummy area was big enough to fit into CoolAdvantage Plus, one of the latest applicators too!
[Hope I’m not going to spoil anyone’s appetite with these cannot-be-further-from-the-truth photos!]
After marking out the specific areas to be treated, I could finally rest on the treatment chair, and get started on my CoolSculpting treatment (and reply my WhatsApp messages).
My tummy area was thoroughly wiped cleaned before a patented gelpad was applied on, to ensure consistent thermal contact during treatment and to protect my skin at the same time.
The CoolSculpting applicator – which gave a mild tugging sensation upon contact – then went onto my fatty tummy. The applicators prescribed by the doctor was two CoolAdvantage applicators for my upper abdomen and one CoolAdvantage Plus for my lower abdomen. All that was left to do was to wait till the cycle ended before having my frozen fats massaged for about 1-2 minutes to “loosen up” the frozen fat crystals, which will then be passed out by my body naturally. I was amazed by how seamless the process was.
The folks at Halley were attentive throughout. To make my wait a little more comfortable, I was cushioned with pillows and gently wrapped with a blanket. I was also provided with Halley’s free wifi access which kept me occupied on Instagram (some of you would have seen the process of my treatment on my IG stories), WhatsApp messages and Facebook. I was handed a buzzer to contact any of the staff for assistance at any point of time. And when asked if I wanted to have a bite and drink while waiting – I had to graciously accept the offer, I rarely say no to food!
“Look! I’m freezing my fats, eating, drinking and keeping warm under a blanket at the same time!” I texted the husband.
“I also want to sit, eat and slim down”, he replied.
Apart from a slight tingling sensation during the first few minutes followed by a sense of coldness on my skin (both of which was very bearable that I wasn’t too concern), my tummy started to feel numb shortly after. It got to a point when I couldn’t feel anything on my tummy. I even wondered if my initial fiddling about had caused the applicator to accidentally come off, and so I buzzed the staff to check.
“Oh, there’s a safety mechanism. The machine is designed with in-built safety measures and will shut down automatically if the sensors detect that the skin is getting too cold or if the applicator is not fitted onto the skin properly”, she quipped. Ahh, so it was just my tummy feeling numb. The treatment was still in progress.
45 minutes seemed to go by so quickly, I was about to take a nap after chatting with some friends on WhatsApp when I heard the CoolSculpting machine let out a beep. A staff came in and quickly proceeded to massage my frozen fats and just like that, I was done CoolSculpting my lower tummy.
Time passed even faster during my second round, this time treating one side of my upper tummy which required a treatment cycle of 35 minutes with the CoolAdvantage. Before I could nap again, the machine beeped to signal the end of the treatment and a staff came in to massage the treated area. After wiping off whatever gel was left on my treated areas (and this is why it is recommended that you change out of your nicer clothes so that it doesn’t get wet by the gel), I was asked to change back into the clothes I came in. I was done for the day, and my next appointment with Dr Tan would be in 3 months’ time!
Apart from my tummy area feeling numb from the cold (I wasn’t shivering, the tummy just felt cold on touch), I didn’t experience any major discomfort despite seeing a slightly wrinkled, red-looking skin on my tummy. Off I went, resuming my normal activities such as picking the kids from school and taking them out for some playground fun. It was indeed zero downtime alright. I could even carry Ollie upon request, except for that one moment he decided to kick me in the tummy in excitement that I let out a slight “oww”.
Next morning, while my tummy didn’t appear as red as the day before, I started to feel some tenderness. But apart from the occasional dull aches (the kind you get when you get too hardworking at the gym) especially when I bend or twist my tummy at a certain angles to lift things, I didn’t feel any discomfort. And as the day went by, the redness and tenderness dissipated.
I could even go for a experiential tea party with Liam, a good friend and her son a few days after; and dress up for the occasion!
2 weeks after my CoolSculpting treatment, I started to get impatient in hopes of seeing drastic results, but all that greeted me was a somewhat still flabby tummy …although my helper and husband claimed that my bulges looked visibly smaller. I guess we’ll just have to wait for another 3 months to see the results.
Till today, I still can’t believe how safe and “effortless” my entire CoolSculpting experience felt. No wonder it’s the world’s #1 non-surgical fat-reduction treatment.

Stay tuned for my next review on the Mini Slim Programme, I can’t wait to share with you on how much it has made visible changes for me!
