“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
“I don’t much care where –”
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
Maybe it all began after that one eventful experiential Wonderland tea party which the oldest boy and I attended earlier in Feb this year. Or maybe my curiosity got the better of me, as a result of being introduced to various immersive play productions to take our kids to, by the cousin – a veteran in the arts, Theatre – which also included recommendations to the said tea party.
Regardless, ever since me and another good mama friend of mine (so glad she was so sporting about going all out to dress up as well) went for a magical afternoon ‘down the rabbit hole’, my world has changed.
My Whimsical Wonderland Tea Party experience was as magical as it sounds. There, I forgot my everyday worries as a daughter, wife and mom who wasn’t glued to my phone, and was transported into a world of madness – the brilliant sort – and imagination.
“When are we going back to the place of doors, to see the talking rabbit and talking caterpillar, mama?”, my 5-year-old would ask ever so often, even till today. And before I could answer each time, he’d enthusiastically continue: “When? This weekend? Tomorrow? I had so much fun mama, and I want to bring Ollie there and show him too.”
In my effort to get the boys off excessive screen time (I do give them daily screen time) and to bond with them, I’ve recently introduced “Pretend Playtime” for 30-45 min prior to bedtime, when we either re-enact a storybook, scenes from our weekdays/weekends or just let our imagination stretch as far as it can! Growing up, it used to be an activity which I did a lot of either alone or with my cousins whenever I stayed over during the holidays, and so I wanted to dedicate some time everyday for the boys to be allowed to drum up their own creativity through immersive learning.
It’s been 3 months since I started ‘Pretend Play’, and it seems to be a hit with them seeing how they’ve been requesting for it every night for the last 3 months, sometimes even asking if they can trade their daily given screentime for an extra hour of ‘Pretend Play’.
So when ANDSOFORTH, known for its immersive theatrical experiences, asked if we’ll be keen in their ANDSOFORTH Junior production of “Wonderland” – a 45mins interactive children show that brings Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland to life – I said YES.
I love a good storytelling session, and am often on the look-out for plays. Hence knowing that the characters of the storybook will come to life, and interact with the kids, this is definitely one to add to our repertoire of ‘Pretend Play’ themes!
On the “school of life” side of things, I’m also thrilled to see how this play will teach children the importance of friendship and personality, stressing the importance of personality in particular – a topic which we never fail to celebrate in our household, often encouraging that it’s okay to be different and be yourself.
With its imagination, fanciful verses, a world full of characters, I’m excited to watch this production of the classic tale myself!
“have i gone mad?
I’m afraid so, but let me tell you something, the best people usually are.”
So be mad, be bold. Bring your kids to an experience to not only behold.
It’ll be merry, it’ll be cheery. With plenty of others also bound to secrecy
We’ll be there, I can’t wait…just thinking of what to wear for our fun playdate
To an adventure, to meet the Hatter,
Into Wonderland, we jump.
