With self-care, self-compassion and taking care of my body being among my top priorities for the year, I was thrilled when HYPOXI® Singapore asked if I wanted to work with them to end the year on a trimmer, fitter & toner note.
OF COURSE, SIGN ME UP ALREADY!
It couldn’t have come at a better timing, I had consecutive holiday plans to Taipei, Hong Kong & Macau upcoming, and I was going to take ANY chance to trim down and look better for the vacation photos (especially when travelling with my younger and good-looking millennial colleagues in Taipei).
In the meantime, for the curiosity’s sake, I had to google to get an idea of what exactly I was going for.
“HYPOXI® is a low-impact exercise method that is up to 3 x more effective at burning stubborn fat than traditional exercise. Through our advanced vacuum and compression technology combined with healthy nutrition, HYPOXI® activates your body’s natural system to burn specific areas of fat and cellulite.”
The words ‘advanced vacuum and compression technology’ stood out. The tagline read ‘design your body.’ I was intrigued. Through more searching online, I also found out that HYPOXI® is well loved by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Kate Moss due to its “quick and easy fix”, effectiveness and being non-invasive.
I scheduled my first appointment and consultation with HYPOXI® after work at 7pm (good news for those working – they close at 8.30pm) and made my way to their studio located at Tai Seng, Breadtalk IHQ via the Circle Line (exit B).
Full Body Analysis – From Inside Out
I was introduced to HYPOXI® coach Sha who was affable and quick to make me feel comfortable with her friendliness. I was then asked change into my work-out clothes in their very minimalist and stylish bathroom (they have 2 within the studios complete with toiletries and towels to refresh yourself post-workout) before beginning my HYPOXI® journey – starting with a full and detailed body analysis done via a very cool 3D Body scanner!
With the 3D Body Scanner being a lot more precise than the old-fashioned tape measuring method (not forgetting the high margins of human error when it comes to measuring before-and-after), it was interesting to see a very accurate body shape and measurement being mapped out along with body composition, lean mass vs fat mass, maximum recommended calorie consumption in a matter of seconds. I was tickled to see that my body fat was at 17% (which was deemed as a decent average) and that my right thigh measurement was larger than my left thigh by a fair bit. Having a 3D visualization of my ‘before’ was useful in discussing and setting fitness goals.
Aware of my “immediate goal” to look trimmer in time for my holidays and festive season, I was recommended to go on the Intensive Programme which meant 3 days of workout + 1-day rest + 3 days of workout. With training sessions taking only 30 minutes, which could easily be arranged after work and on weekend mornings, I was gamed!
THE HDC (Hypoxi® -Dermology) Machine
My first activity was a pre-workout one at the Hypoxi® -Dermology (HDC) machine. “It helps to reduce fluid retention, improves micro-blood circulation and detox,” Sha quipped as we walked over to a dimly-lit room within the studio which housed the machine. At first glance, I didn’t think much of it, wondering, how lying on a lounge chair bed was going to help me detox.
Little did I anticipate that it would involve putting on a scuba-looking compression suit which would be connected to the machine via tubes to suck air out of the suit, causing my body to be compressed by the suit before constant pressure would be applied around the stomach, hip, buttock and thigh region (akin to manual cupping but in a much more comfortable and sophisticated setting).
And therein lies the magic as I lay down for a good 20 minutes getting a deep tissue massage which would accelerate my results on the L250 (exercise bike) machine amongst other benefits such as reducing the appearance of my cellulite and having firmer skin tone.
Going on the HDC machine before I began my exercise session was my favourite part and highlight of the programme with HYPOXI® . It was a luxury, falling asleep to dim lights and white noise of the machine and having 20 minutes of uninterrupted rest. Although you can also opt to read a book/magazine, play with your mobile phone or entertain yourself with Netflix (which HYPOXI® will be happy to provide you with their device).
Each HDC session would leave me feeling a little more recharged, and surprisingly less bloated. I was amazed at feeling lighter the morning after doing on HDC and less sluggish – which I’ve been combating for a few years now. This HDC machine was gold and beneficial indeed, and if I could, I would have one in my home just so I could lie on it every day.
Right after HDC was the customised HYPOXI® training on the LS250 machine (an exercise bike housed in a pod which uses a patented vacuum and compression technology to increase blood flow to the lower half of my body to achieve optimum fat burning). Let’s just say it has changed the way I view hitting gym equipment with its very intimate setting and personable service from my coach (who knew when to check in on me and when to leave me to indulge in reading magazines and watching Netflix!)
