I enjoyed being a stay home mum to Liam so much that I wanted to create a solution that will allow me to do it for as long as possible. An avid online shopper who would impulsively but excitedly add things to cart for my little boy ever so often, I decided to marry my work skill (digital marketeer and media planner) and online shopping to start a home based business.
I ran my first online business – a fashionwear business – in 2010, so I wasn’t new to this. Except this time I didn’t have business partners I could share cost with, bounce off ideas to, help spread the word around and depend on whenever I was in need of a break be it out of attending to mummy duties, wanting some me-time or necessity derived from unforeseen situations.
Rockabyelane was conceived when I got sugar high from purchasing my first few bandana bibs for Liam from a Mothercare sale. The ones available in the shops were mainly solid coloured and plainly designed, so you imagine how I squealed in excitement when I came across stylish, patterned bandana bibs from Skibz. I could finally add a splash of quirky to my son’s predictable ensemble of tees and shorts in a functional way.
It’s been close to 3 amazing years since the online shop took off since mid 2012. And while it has nothing short of challenging, lonely, feeling broke (initial months of low cash flow), depressing even at times (questioning myself what am I doing, and would this even work out?); I’m grateful for the unwavering support of customers (many of whom have turned friends), vendors, retailers/stockists, family and friends who have been encouraging. It’s not easy sticking to niche product nor catering to a niche market in Singapore where normal bibs are alpenty, yet there continues to be a growing trend of parents who appreciate Skibz’s quality, style and product lifespan.
I stick by my principals of offering a honest product review of the goods I sell at the shop, and the best customer service I can provide in the business; which has slowly but surely paid off. I am unsure of business expansion or development plans at the moment but I sure hope it evolves into something bigger that can continue to allow me to work from home while watching my 2nd son, Oliver, grow up before he heads off to pre-school and spend afternoons at the playground with my firstborn for as long as possible.
